It's been party-central on the blog here lately because it's my favorite way to create (and it involves so many DIYs that I have lots to talk about!) So bear with me a few more times as I share about my daughter's 3rd birthday party and all the fun elements within it. Today I want to show you how I made felt doughnuts. They were used as decor & then the kids at the party got to take them home as a favor to use in their own play kitchens! So even if you aren't planning a party, you'll definitely want to read on and make these for your own imaginative play! Because after all, there's never a bad time for a doughnut.

Have you ever read If You Give A Mouse a Cookie? There's a whole series that includes the original mouse cookie, Moose a Muffin, Pig a Pancake, Cat a Cupcake and of course Dog a Donut (just to name a few). Our whole family loves these books! My daughter's birthday party was themed around the series, meaning that each table or section was based on a different book. This table was all about Dog and his donut!
I found this great tutorial on felt doughnuts and used the basic idea to make my own. I'm not sure why she left an opening on the outside though so I changed that and also sewed the topping on before turning it. Hope that makes it a bit easier for you (and less hand sewing so it's faster!)
First cut out your circles from felt (2 pieces) and cut a hole from the middle of each. Then from a different color felt, create an icing piece (also with a hole in the middle). I hand embroidered some sprinkles on it then top stitched with my sewing machine to attach it to my felt. Don't forget to keep the middle hole spot open for turning! Here's how it will look once the icing has been attached:
Next, take your 2 pieces (one just the tan felt, 1 with the frosting attached to the tan) and putting them right sides together sew all the way around the outside of the doughnut. Keep the middle hole open. It will look like this when this step is done:
(The photo above is of 2 different doughnuts. On the back of it you will only see tan. On the front you will see the stiching from your frosting) It's like a little sandwich from the side view.
Next, carefully turn the doughnut inside out using the open middle hole.
After everything is turned right side out, use Poly-fil or another stuffing to give the doughnuts their shape and blanket stitch the middle hole closed. It's easiest if you do a little stuffing, a small batch of stitches, some more stuffing, some more stitches until you make it all the way around.
The blanket stitch gives it a secure hold for a long play life and is visually a prettier stitch for projects like this (it's also a very basic, beginner stitch so it's easy to do!)
That's it. These doughnuts are pretty easy in terms of dimensional felt food and are about the cutest things ever! We did all sprinkles with different colored frosting but you could do plain, just frosting, drizzle, nuts, the possibilities are endless! What would you put on yours? Would you use them for a party like this (or an entire doughnut themed party?) or just for play? Let me know & follow me on Instagram!

Library Books (dry erase!) Sign & Storage
If you know me in person, you would know that I'm obsessed with books. Me personally? Well no- I haven't read anything in the last 3 years that wasn't based around some parenting philosophy (and even those I skimmed for the good parts). But children's books- yes. Most definitely. One hundred and ten percent, can't get enough, completely and utterly obsessed. It's been a while since I've counted up our books but I think we personally own over 300 stories. We also go to the library every week for story time and to check out between 10-15 new titles.
Because we have books in every corner of our house, car and lives I needed a place to keep library books organized and separated. This has become especially true since I've started hitting up the library's book sales. Even though I black out the labels, I still occasionally try to return a book that I bought from them! I've made my own picture frame dry erase board before and I thought I'd take the same concept and make myself a little library books reminder board!
I already had this frame because it's such a nice size and shape I was saving it for something! Head to your local thrift store to find a big frame for cheap. It doesn't matter what is on the mat or photo area because it'll be covered anyways!
Here's what you'll need:
It's so easy to make!
First, remove the mat from the frame and use it as a pattern on the wrapping paper. When cutting, make sure to give an extra half inch on each side to allow the wrapping paper to fold around the mat after it's cut.
Cut it out.
Glue down the outside edges of the wrapping paper to the mat. For this type of project, stick glue works just fine. Cut a large "X" out of the middle and trim the wrapping paper down so that you have just enough to fold around the mat on the inside as well.
Glue it down.
Next, you need to make the actual sign. I would have printed up something a little nicer but my printer was out of commission (as is often the case) and I wanted it done NOW so I wrote it out by hand. It looks pretty good for handwritten and it gets the job done. If you have easy access to a printer though, you might want to type something up.
Hang your sign on the wall above a wooden crate. I put ours in the empty corner between my kids' rooms since library books are split between them and it's the perfect space for this! You can attach the marker with string, or just lay it on top of the frame like I do. It's tall enough the kids can't mess with it.
I wish I would have made my writing in black instead of grey. I thought it'd be better in making the dry erase marker stand out but its hard to see in pictures. (It's visible in person). Otherwise, I LOVE how this project turned out. We use it every week! Bonus- my kids love it too!

Glue it down centered in the hole of the mat. (add tape if you want it extra secure)
Put the back of the frame back on and that's it! My son had fun drawing on it immediately. Luckily I went to erase it shortly after because I didn't realize that he was drawing with a sharpie. Oops! Note: Permanent marker is not easily erasable! Use dry erase ones for daily use!

Decorating Tip #4 {Wall Collage with SIX fun ideas!}
If you've been following along with us over the last couple of weeks you know that I have been sharing design elements that I used in decorating my son's nursery. If you are new to Cut, Craft, Create, don't forget to catch up on the first and second posts. Don't worry if you aren't decorating a baby's room- these tips can be used in all rooms of your home or even in your office!
Today's decorating tip is a wall art collage that takes common design elements and fills it with some unexpected details.
There are 6 parts to this design. You can replace each of these details to fit your room/theme in particular to make it your own.
#1- Word Art (With AMAZING frame!)
I typed up words that I think of when imagining my sweet little boy growing up and experiencing life. Some of these words were: run, play, dirt, curious, joy, adventure, and explore (my favorite word on there). I want my child to experience life in all it's messiness. I want him to explore his world and play in the dirt. I also included his name to be positioned in the very center of the word collage (For the sake of not having his full name plastered across the internet, I changed it above to "Baby Thumper!" Thanks photo editing!)
After typing up several of each word in different fonts and sizes, I printed it out on regular paper and cut into strips. I chose to then tea-stain the paper strips (make unsweetened tea or coffee and then "blot" the paper with a sponge). This is optional, I just like the look. Let the paper dry before continuing.
To put it all together I made a backing that fit just inside the frame from a heavier cardstock. Then using a basic glue stick (found in the scrapbooking or adhesive sections of any store) I stuck all those tiny little paper strips on to the backing. Put it all together, hang and enjoy!
(Note: Check out your local thrift stores, flea markets, antique shops, etc for inexpensive but beautiful frames such as this one!)
#2- Detail Memorabilia
For my son's Peter Rabbit nursery I opted to hang a "vintage" copy of the Peter Rabbit story with a crisp black frame around it. The two pieces are not connected in any way. The frame was hung as usual and the book was hung with a nail just inside the front cover. I then stuck the front cover to the first page with a few Zots (glue dots) so that the cover didn't swing open but the nail is still "hidden".
For another room, you could use this idea to hang up your grandmother's necklace, a family crest, special ribbons, etc. The possibilities are endless!
#3- Large Focal Picture
I'm not going to say much about this because there are so many examples of this photo on Pinterest- such as this one, this one, and this one (which is a little different but I love just the same). I wish I would have had my letter blocks to spell out his name across the bottom but ended up using large chipboard letters from my scrapbooking supply (again, I covered his name in this photo)
For a room other than a nursery, make a large print of a favorite family photo, an aerial photo of your home or even just something you like (think: stunning photo of the Grand Canyon, etc). I recommend Shutterfly for photo prints and they have deals all the time where you can get a 16x20 print for free (just pay shipping).
#4- Inspirational Quote
I made this out of extra foam board I had from my anniversary map (never throw anything away- ha!), cut it to the shape I wanted, painted it with acrylic paint and put vinyl lettering on top. We actually made this as a prop for one of our maternity photos and loved it so much it became a part of the nursery.
You could make your favorite quote, phrase or just something fun (like "whip it good" in the kitchen!) in the same way I did, or by creating a wood sign, painting a canvas or even printing on paper! This one is so easy to personalize and if you find a sign in a store you like, even easier!
#5- Monogram Piece
We've all seen the different ways that these craft letters can be decorated and used. Many times they are displayed in a nursery to spell out baby's name. I suggest using only the first letter in a larger collage like this. It's personalized and sweet without having their name everywhere (especially since his name was already present in a few other design elements shown already).
For another room, simply use the initial of your family's last name. The year that you got married or some other significant date could be used as well.
{Love the engraved button with our last name? My mom ordered these for me from Pick Your Plum. It's a company that features a few different items on super sale each day. They probably wont have these buttons again *maybe!*, but it's definitely worth checking them out!}
#6- Smaller Photo Frame Set
Using some extra 4x6 frames I had on hand, I hung them in a horizontal-vertical-horizontal-vertical pattern along the right side of the collage. These were all photos from the first few days of our son's life while still in the hospital. One of just him, one each of him with mommy/daddy and our first family photo (which I looooove!)
It's easy to use this idea in any layout to make a "line" along an edge and bring together all the separate pieces a little better.
{Your Turn!}
Which design element is your favorite? My son loves looking at the photos of him (#3 and #6) and touching all of the different textures on the wall. This would be a great project for a large open space in a living room- personalize with family initials, special photos and important family mementos!

For the Love of Reading!
Here soon, very soon (not soon enough!) I will be on vacation. Sunny beaches, southern sweet tea, relaxing without a care in the world.... oh, sorry- back to reality for now. As I am eagerly awaiting my upcoming vacation, I am making a mental list of things to pack. Top of the list (besides a swim suit)... books! I love reading but I sort of forget that I love reading. Vacation is the only time it seems that I am able to settle down, relax and enjoy a good book. What is necessary when reading good books? Good bookmarks of course! That is why I have been fiddling around this week to create a few options for my vacation reading:
They are all sort of different, come check out each one:
{Every Book is an Adventure}
{A Touch of Stitching}
{Put Your Heart into it}
It's so hard to pick a favorite... although that heart one sure steals my heart!
{Upcoming News!}
Before we end this post, let me tell you about an exciting event coming up- "I can make that" March!
How many of you are like me and get a little pin-crazy on Pinterest? I have more things pinned than I have time to do. After having another pinning "episode" the other day I realized that I have never, no NEVER made anything from my "Clothing/Accessories" album. Some of the pins are of tutorials on how to make such and such item, but many are just things that I liked and thought "I could make that". Well my friends, the time is here for me to call in the tabs on myself. The entire month of March, my posts will be of this journey.
I am doing this for 2 reasons:
{1} I want to finally make some of these cute items! Being responsible to you all keeps me from putting
this off even more (thanks in advance).
{2} I want to inspire you all to work on your pins as well. Think of this as a group journey. We can
encourage each other to keep working! This means of course that I want to hear about your
progress as well, so keep me updated!
Along this journey I will show the original pin that inspired me and tips on how I achieved the look. I have pinned a lot of expensive items, so hopefully I will be able to save both you and myself money by making our own version. Interested? I would be honored for you to follow along and to give me feedback along the way. This is the first time I have ever done a month long series like this, so let me know how you like it (or don't like it) and of course, show me your progress too!
{Your Turn}
Okay, I am finally done talking... for now. What did you think of the bookmarks? Do you have a favorite? What about the upcoming "I could make that" March? Will you be sharing in this journey with me? I hope you will! See you all again soon.
Happy Crafting,
Kelsie Ann
They are all sort of different, come check out each one:
{Every Book is an Adventure}
{It doesn't need to be an adventure book to find yourself on a new adventure when reading it}
{A Touch of Stitching}
{Put Your Heart into it}
{I found that quote online and it said it is "attributed" to Mark Twain- do you know? My favorite part about this? When it's lying on the page you can see the text through the heart!}
It's so hard to pick a favorite... although that heart one sure steals my heart!

Dress Up Your Stuff With Vinyl!
Hello Hello my crafty brothers and sisters! Do you ever feel the need to dress something up a little? To use your crafty magic to turn the bland into the fantastic? Maybe it is a boring agenda book cover or a plain looking light switch. Well my friends, I have one simple word for you: Vinyl.
Using vinyl to dress up an item is a quick and easy way to personalize anything you own. Both my mama and I have been in the vinyl mood lately. Come check out what we made:
I. love. planning. I love writing things down in my agenda book and looking ahead towards the week (like I am actually going to follow it). There is also a particular format that I like the pages to be. This means that I can't go find a beautifully made cover because odds are, it doesn't have the inside that I want. That also means that I get to personalize my new agenda book however I want! Isn't it darling?
Just choose a design, cut it out in vinyl and stick it to your book. It's that easy!
I used to hate vinyl. My mom would always suggest I use it for something but I could never seem to get it to work. It was more frustrating than the craft was worth. That was until I found transfer paper!
If you are new to vinyl or having trouble getting your images from the paper to your project, I HIGHLY recommend transfer paper. Just follow the instructions on the package to make your life one hundred times easier. I do not exaggerate- I love this stuff!
Onto My Mama's Project:
My mom just repainted her dining room. It is hard to see in the pictures, but the whole room is a sort of light cocoa color with splashes of white and other colors. It is stunning! The first thing I did when I walked into the house was to (literally) gasp out loud! I absolutely love it. Anyways, during her renovation she searched for a light switch cover that matched the new room... to no avail. So, as any crafty woman would do: she made one herself.
All she did was paint a blank cover the same color as the wall (see, I told you the picture doesn't look like the right color!) let dry, and covered it with her vinyl design.
She used Design 2503 called "frame: flourish" from the Silhouette Store.

switch and screws. It was meant to be!
What a pretty pattern. Much better than anything we could find in the store!

What do you have lying around the house that could use a little "dressing up"? Had you ever thought of using one of the frame shapes as a light switch cover? Seeing these shapes being used in new ways is a surefire way to get the creative juices flowing. I would love to hear what you are up to so feel free to share!
